Preliminary Material

Preliminary Work Evaluation:
For my preliminary piece, I created a front page and contents page for a school magazine. For the front cover, I took a photo of a student in a medium close up, this is because I felt that this was the most suitable shot for this magazine. In the background is some of the grounds of the school and further emphasises the fact that this is what the magazine is about. For the contents page, I used two medium close ups of separate students and placed them under the list of magazine contents.
One of the components of the magazine which I found successful was, my use of typography. I feel this because, the way in which the text has been laid out on the front cover allows the whole image to come to the foreground meaning it is more appealing to the reader as the words are written at different angles to ensure that the person in the photograph isn’t obstructed. Also the font I used is bold and clear which means it is easily visible. Another thing which I think went well was my choice of image for the front cover of the magazine. This is because it was a picture which suggested to anyone looking at the magazine, that the school makes students happy and this is because the shot I took (a medium close-up) allowed the person in the images face. This means that their emotion is projected and gives a form of communication with the reader. The lanyard is also clearly visible in the picture which is something which is a form of identification as a student. My final convention which worked well in my preliminary piece of work was my use of a bar code. This is because, by placing a bar code on the front cover, it meant that it made the magazine have a more realistic feeling to it because to buy most things in this day and age there is a bar code to be scanned which identifies different products.

On the other hand, there are some things that could do with a large amount of improvement. One of these things that need to be addressed and improved is the contents page as a whole page. This is because the two images which are used on the page are not quite edited well enough and have rough edges from the process of editing the image. Also the lighting in the two images contrast each other which is something I should have addressed when I was editing the image in the first place. Another poor trait which can be identified on the contents page is the difference in font. There are two different fonts used on a single page which doesn’t look as good as one font because it makes it seems untidy. Finally there are a large number of blank spaces on the contents page where there is nothing in the background or foreground, this means that there is blank space which means there isn’t enough on the page most of the time.
